So there’s a new movie coming out (or already out) called “Hounddog,” starring Dakota Fanning. It appears to be a coming of age story about a young girl in the 1950’s who idolizes Elvis Presley, like all other girls of her time.
However, there seems to be some controversy over the movie. Part of this film involves the filming of a rape scene between a 12-year-old boy and Fanning’s character. Apparently there was no stunt double, and the filming took place when Fanning was 12. I’m also not sure what the scene looks like, so there is probably no nudity.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I don’t think that this is exactly…. kosher, regardless of whether or not there was nudity involved. To me, there seems to be something wrong with a 12-year-old girl, actress or not, filming a depiction of a rape scene. I know that people are saying that kids are growing up older younger these days, but it still doesn’t seem to be something that is agreeable. It seems to me that a child of 12 is not old enough to handle the maturity of the situation, faux or not.
And what about Fanning’s 12-year-old male counterpart, who also had to film the scene? I would assume that there was no body double for him, either.
On the other hand, is this what we have to look forward to in the future? That is, movies that portray realistic situations that have happened in the past or may happen daily? Maybe we should become used to the idea. “Hounddog” may do for the movie industry what Nectar by David C. Fickett (see/click below) did for the fiction genre; bring people to the gritty realization that life is not just red roses and laughs.
This may seem a tad premature, as few people outside the movie industry or the Sundance Film Festival actually seem to know what the scene could possibly be like. This is merely a screening of the possible bout of foolishness we may be in for relatively soon.

PS – I know Fickett’s wife personally.
